B-11 REQUEST FOR APPROVAL OF RESOLUTION NO. 98-30 OF THE SCHOOL BOARD OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, REAFFIRMING ITS COMMITMENT TO CONTINUING AND ENHANCING BILINGUAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS, WHICH ARE OF CRUCIAL IMPORTANCE TO THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT AND TO OUR COMMUNITY On June 2nd the voters of California, with the intention of ending bilingual education in that state, approved Proposition 227, which arose out of the 1974 Supreme Court Case of Lau v. Nichols. This poses the threat of national repercussions, as other states may be influenced by the California legislature to attempt to curtail bilingual education programs. RECOMMENDED: That The School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida, approve Resolution No. 98-29 of the School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida, reaffirming its commitment to continuing and enhancing bilingual education programs, which are of crucial importance to this school district and to our community.
